Kontravoid has spent time behind the drums for people like Crystal Castles and Trust but on his debut album he takes to the analogue synths to create a dark, brooding pop masterpiece of an lp. Kontravoid’s vocal is a brilliant low-growl, often run through warped effects, and is accompanied by exceptional, stirring arpeggiated synt
hs and washes of sound. modern touchstones could be the likes of John Maus or Trust but Kontravoid’s vision is a more twisted one, taking in goth influences and ending up with a monstrous result that is harder to define. when it matters there’s still plenty to dance and lose your mind to, but the imagination here goes way beyond those activities exclusively.
